A clinical trial (Avants et al., 2000) examining the effects of auricular acupuncture for cocaine dependence in 82 cocaine and opioid dependent patients found that patients treated with auricular acupuncture 5 times per week for 8 weeks were significantly more likely to provide cocaine-negative urine samples relative to both relaxation control and needle-insertion control groups.
